Voices Merged – Female Heads
Ink, watercolour and pencil on watercolour paper
29.7 x 42.0 cm, 2019, £POA

This series of drawings explore feminine power, the allure coupled with suggested vulnerability and veiled voices. This work stems from thoughts around my own experiences of growing up within strict household, of being marginalised and impacted by typical cultural attitudes Asian men have towards women. Traditionally women’s voices were silenced and dominated by men, so the work draws upon such ideas, exploring how unspoken voices soon start to merge when veiled. Growing up, often I was not able to voice my opinion or express my desires and emotions, so my sense of self was somewhat a mystery. In this series, I attempt to express the internal and communal battles some Asian women could connect with, the taboo in relation feminine identity and sexuality.  The female figures express an idealistic feminine beauty, whose gaze speak of words that could not be spoken.
